Commentary on Keith Mashinter’s “Calculating Sensory Dissonance: Some Discrepancies Arising from the Models of Kameoka & Kuriyagawa, and Hutchinson & Knopoff”

نویسنده

  • RICHARD PARNCUTT
چکیده

Mashinter’s (2006) mathematical model of sensory dissonance neglects the dependence of roughness on waveform, the role of masking, the distribution of roughness across critical bands, the possible positive contribution of fusion or toneness to euphony, and the familiarity and music-theoretical functions of a sonority. Of course not all these aspects can reasonably be included in a model, but they can affect the data with which its predictions are compared. Submitted 2006 August 12; accepted 2006 August 15.

Measuring Dissonance: considerations for the microtonalist

One area of microtonal research is concerned with digitally re-defining musical spectra so that bespoke microtonal scales can be paired so that new instruments capable of coherently performing exotic scales can be realised. In this field of timbre-matched microtonal scales, sensory dissonance perception models can provide invaluable information about the way that the human ear reacts to the spe...

Real-time Dissonancizers: Two Dissonance-augmenting Audio Effects

We present two simple perceptually motivated audio effects designed to increase the perceived sensory dissonance/roughness (a process we call “dissonancization”) of audio input. The first involves heterodyning multiple bands of the audio signal at different frequencies to break each sinusoid in each band into two sinusoids separated in frequency by the amount that Kameoka and Kuriyagawa [1] pre...
